Quickly quickly because PEOPLE INSIST ON EXISTING IRL:

[5 fave gender-fuckery characters; for upupa-epops]I'm interpreting "gender fuckery" broadly fyi. It's not that the following characters TOTALLY UPEND gender norms but that certain elements of their presentation subvert what one usually would expect. In alphabetical order b/c that's the way I roll:

1) Buffy motherfucking Summers, a.k.a. the thing monsters have nightmares about. For being completely conventionally feminine and simultaneously a warrior woman. I know we all hate Joss and that he is Problematic &c. &c. but still, Buffy Summers exists. Your typical "ditzy" Californian blonde who only cares about shopping and gossiping about boys, whom every other horror story would deem fit to be killed off for her femininity. I am all for unfeminine women on TV, I really am, but -- much like my undying love for Legally Blonde -- it means a lot to me that Buffy didn't have to be masculinised in order to be the hero of the story. Her strength was in silly womanly things like emotions. And regardless of how you feel about the finale being PROBLEMATIC, I think we should all agree that taking an axe to everything the Council of Patriarchs stood for was in itself to be endorsed.

2) Darla. Because of that motherfucking first episode of BtVS where she opens the show in a Catholic schoolgirl uniform which, of course, she uses to lure the innocent male prey. When it comes to using traditional femininity as a weapon in order to eat men Darla is the role model to which we should all aspire. I also have a lot of feelings about her more or less being the boss of the Fanged Four, about how she was really the one who sired Angel and groomed him to be the monster he became (similar to Dru siring and grooming Spike -- lots of monstrous mothers in this verse). Behind every great man is an even greater woman, or so they say. (And yes, I am aware of how the horrific maternal plot over on AtS made Darla the expected sacrificial woman, but this is a happy post.)

3) Eowyn of Rohan. FORMATIVE BITCH. Fearless mofo who dressed herself up in dudes' clothes and went to fight for Minas Tirith in defiance of the gilded cage her family would rather have kept her in. (Some Mulan bullshit right there btw.) And when Witch-King dude got in her way and boasted that no living man could defeat him, Eowyn pulled off her helmet and said BOW DOWN BITCH FOR I AM NO MAN (#hairflip). Word.

4) Kara Thrace. Because gender-swapping the original BSG series' beer-sculling, cussing, womanising, thrill-seeking ~bad boy~ character was a stroke of fabulous. As opposed to 1) and 2) on this list, Kara was an emotional idiot. Her strengths lay mostly in the masculine space-battling domain -- she was pretty much the best fighter pilot in the fleet; meanwhile, her people skills left, er, something to be desired. She was a deep-feeling character, but she'd rather have a boxing match than talk about her feelings. (My woman.)

5) And I'm tentatively putting Katniss Everdeen here, too, after reading this article. (And no, we do not talk about the epilogue.) lbr Katniss's existence is also fuckery in a systemic sense in that it laughs at the idea that a woman-centric action movie franchise cannot sell.

[anne of green gables; for woobloo]I read the books/watched the movies a long, long time ago so bear with my memory. Random non-definitive FEELS:

  • CHILDHOOD.

  • PERFECT SERIES.

  • Formative bitch.

  • Neurotic drama queen with a temper = intro post.

  • Loved that she was defined/defined herself mostly by her brain.

  • BUT also loved that she was super emotional and idealistic. I remember reading some article somewhere about how Hermione Granger is such a rare important female character because she's "allowed to be both super intelligent and emotional". Well, I ::heart:: Hermione, but HAAAAAVE YOU MET ANNE SHIRLEY?

  • Although it wasn't a SUPER ANGSTY series, I liked how you could tell that Anne was kind of a sad and messed up person (at least at the start) in that she pretty much held herself together as a kid by escaping into her imagination. I understand you, Anne.

  • As a kid I liked that it was a hopeful story insofar as Anne started off as an unwanted misfit batted around from foster home to foster home but finally found a ~place to belong~ with Matthew and Marilla and so was able to come into her own. (LISTEN, THIS SERIES IS LIKE ONE OF TWO THINGS I LIKED AS A CHILD THAT DID NOT FUCK ME UP FOR LIFE. TELL NO ONE.)

  • Anne/Gilbert is the OTP. In fact, I am pretty sure they were the origins of my BEST FRIENDS WHO REGRETTABLY FALL IN LOVE kink. Though, they worked out in the end (thank God -- one Jo/Laurie is bad enough).

  • Speaking of which, I also always loved that Anne was such an emotional idiot. One of my fave parts of the book/movie is when Marilla tells her that she's so hung up on stories and fantasies that she can't recognise her attachment to real people. I FEEL DATZZZZ.

  • Yay @ Anne getting to see through her personal dreams and ambitions and get everything she wanted.

  • But also yay that her coming of age arc was in a lot of ways about fantasy v.s. reality and, I guess, learning how to make the two co-exist. As in, life does not always turn out the way you have planned, and sometimes the things you thought you wanted turn out not to be what you really want after all, and that can be cool too.

  • I like to think I could reread the series today and still feel exactly the same way.

04 | the ship that would ruin the characters parties if it happened

For day 8 of ramble month spuffy_noelle asked me to ramble about Cesare/Lucrezia. Thus I've decided to use this as an opportunity to fill another day of that wrong shipping meme wrought from the pits of hell. It's going in this slot now for reasons of trolling and being literal. LBR, I prefer that my ships actually do happen (not least because teh sex), so let's go with a relationship that DID go there but would probably have been better off not doing so.

Doubling up again today because yesterday was devoted to watching Catching Fire and then being emotionally dead inside. With no further ado:

[faith/wesley; for superkappa]
I have, ahem, summed up my Faith/Wesley feelings in times past, but for the sake of this meme let us expound.

So, Faith/Wesley appeal to me because they are mirrors. (Mirror ships are the best ships, &c. &c.) Ironically, of all Wesley's relationships with women it turns out to be the most functional. This is because he learns how to forgive the parts of himself he sees in Faith by forgiving Faith. (Compare to: villifying Lilah because he wants to punish the symbol of his losing everything; idealising Fred because she is essentially a better version of himself). Much is made of the Angel-Faith duo of redemption (and understandably so, it is a compelling dynamic) but to me the idea of Wesley as Faith's mirror is more resonant by sheer virtue of Wesley not being a centuries-old mass murderer. So.

The greatest moment (objectively speaking, obviously) of S4 is Wesley enlisting Faith's help in restoring Angel's soul. Faith Lehane, i..e. Wesley's former torturer, she whom Wes once called a "rabid animal" incapable of being rehabilitated. But at this point, Wesley knows what it's like to be someone unworthy of being forgiven.

From Salvage:

FAITH: Angel's the only one in my life who's never given up on me. There's no way I'm giving up on—
WESLEY: I know. That's why it had to be you.

(I'd also like to point out that this entire arc indicates the way in which Angel is the patriarch from which "bad children" Faith and Wes long for validation.)

By seeking Faith's help here, by giving her the opportunity to help save the day and make ground on her path to redemption, Wesley is implicitly acknowledging that she is one in a long line of people he himself has failed. And I think at this point he has recognised they are kindred spirits, which is probably best encapsulated by this moment:

/clutches empty ribcage

Wesley also later uses their mutually terrible self-image to spur her into the fight. From Release:

You haven't changed. You can't... Because you're sick. You've always been sick. It goes right down to the roots rotting your soul. That's why your friends turned on you in Sunnydale, why the Watchers' Council tried to kill you. No one trusts you, Faith. You're a rabid dog who should've been put down years ago!

Of course, this is totally cold and ruthless. That's Wesley for you. But the point is to encourage her to prove those words wrong? The point is: You are better than the terrible way you see yourself. You can be better. (Maybe I can, too.)

And then they team up and bring Angelus back and save the day and my heart expands, 'tis grown a bulge in it, etc. etc. It's the Watcher/Slayer duo they should have been from the start. A second chance can be a beautiful thing, friends.

TL;DR OTP that should have been, the end.

----------------------------

[the vampire chronicles; for scorp]
lol The Vampire Chronicles. I am not entirely ashamed to admit I've read virtually all of them. Except for Merrick, which I somehow missed, and will probably not be rushing out to catch up on considering the series totally deteriorates after book 5. Oh, and I don't think I've read The Vampire Armand, only I actually do want to get around to that some day because Armand's backstory intrigues me.

My rundown of each book is basically:

  1. Interview with the Vampire: GREAT

  2. The Vampire Lestat: Objectively probably not as good as Interview, but GREAT in my eyes. I think it was kind of genius to shift the POV to the character who was basically the antagonist of the first book and reveal that the series is really ALL ABOUT LESTAT. AS IT SHOULD BE TBQH.

  3. The Queen of the Damned: Shamelessly melodramatic and cracktastic and all the more enjoyable for it tbh. I mean, you really can't argue with the premise of a brat prince vampire deciding to become a rockstar.

  4. The Tale of the Body Thief: The zany hijinks continue as Lestat switches bodies with some dude. I say, carry on.

  5. Memnoch the Devil: I LOVE THIS BOOK TBH. The depiction of Satan (lol) totally fascinated me at the time and since then it has been my headcanon (of hell, obviously).

  6. -

  7. -

  8. Blood & Gold: ider this book tbh, except that it's about Marius.

  9. Blackwood Farm: idek

  10. Blood Canticle: No. (THERE WAS SOME DEMONIC BABY? IDK.)

So, yeah, basically, should have ended with Memnoch.

Scorp also asked me for character/ship thoughts so let me contemplate.

Well, Lestat was a bro, obviously. (Though, even he became considerably less enjoyable as the series wore on. But we don't talk about that.) I mean, if we're going to talk about formative assholes, as far as I'm concerned he is the character upon which all characters of the archetype should be judged. Like I said, I think it was a really smart choice to make the series ABOUT him insofar as it kind of meant that all bets were off? iirc Rice didn't encourage us to debate about his morality or lack thereof. He was basically just presented as an amoral hooligan, the end. And the premise of his POV books was "Lestat gets up to zany hijinks, fun for everyone". I ACCEPT.

After Lestat my memory of other characters gets fuzzy tbh. I liked Louis okay but no strong feels. Claudia was GREAT. Armand was intriguing. Everyone else was okay, I guess?

As far as group dynamics go, nothing can beat the Claudia/Lestat/Louis triumvirate of erotic angst. I had some wrong!shippy feels about Claudia/Louis despite (... BECAUSE????) of the age difference (which makes no difference after centuries anyway lbr). And ofc Louis and Lestat's man love will go on. I always found Louis's incredibly unreliable narration in Interview compelling for this reason. It was totally understandable that both he and Claudia would resent Lestat for what he did to them, but the way Louis villified Lestat and made out as though he was not secretly madly in love with him was both deeply fascinating and hilarious tbh.

Aside from Louis, I always had a deep inability to ship Lestat with anyone. Except maybe his mother. I am profoundly nocurr for all his het flings (Akasha, Rowan, blah blah). I felt like Lestat fell madly in love with everyone so much that I did not actually buy any of it... ? LOL. And I had zero interest in seeing him in a romance, so ehhhhh.

NOW LET US DISCUSS THE FILMS.

Well, Interview with the Vampire is fabulous (and on my top 15 fave movies, obvs). One would not picture Tom Cruise/Brad Pitt/Kirsten Dunst in such roles, and there is some awkwardness, but IMO they all did the characters justice. Brad Pitt is fine. Kirsten Dunst is FABULOUS. And it makes me sad that Tom Cruise went psycho after this film because you can tell he made an effort to understand Lestat and it is basically the only time I've found him to deliver a nuanced performance.

I have some nitpicks about the script, which can be anvilly and slow in parts. But tonally the film is on point and iirc gets all the important things about the book, so it can stay.

lol, and then we have Queen of the Damned... So, let it be known that I first watched this at the age of 15, at 2am on a stormy night, while intoxicated. Ergo, the first experience I had of it was... kind of amazing????? I'm not proud, friends. But lbr it is probably on my top 10 list of all-time terriblemazing movies. Also, I am easily susceptible to the soundtrack, which is objectively gr8. (The Deftones' contribution remains a jam tbqh.) I am also easily susceptible to Stuart Townsend's wardrobe in that movie, which was a gift from Satan tbh.

Okay, that's enough about horrific formative influences. COMMENTS/QUESTIONS?

In no particular order and totally not exhaustive:

  1. The Anne of Green Gables movies. CHILDHOOD. With the exception of the third film, which we do not talk about. To be discussed further on another day.

  2. The Harry Potter movies. Gotta be on the list. I have watched virtually all of them 500 million times.

  5. Bonnie & Clyde. I'm convinced this story is responsible for 95% of my horrific choices in faves to this day. Amen.

  6. Interview with the Vampire. Look, I grew up on the Vampire Chronicles because such was my disturbed childhood, ONE DOES NOT SIMPLY CHOOSE ONE'S FORMATIVE INFLUENCES. And I still maintain this movie is the gold standard for "sympathetic blood-sucking protagonists". Vampire movies just aren't what they used to be. /grumble grumble

  7. Peter Pan. Fine, this is basically a list of "formative shit that fucked me up for life", SAY WHAT YOU WILL. And Peter/Wendy is the doomed ship to rule them all, don't look at me.

  8. Chicago. HE HAD IT COMING. Fave musical or fave musical? Fave musical. And beacon of aspirational misandry. #formative

  9. Legally Blonde. Actually the most empowering movie ever tbh.

  10. Mulan. No other Disney compares.

  11. Anastasia. IN THE END I WANNA BE STANDING AT THE BEGINNING WITH YOUUUUU. No further commentary necessary.

  12. The Silence of the Lambs. (lol @ my jump in genre) Well, because this list needs more serial killers having inappropriate sexual tension with protagonists.

  13. American Beauty. When I think back on this movie I actually find it terribly pretentious, but tbh that still doesn't erase the huge impact it had on me as a teenager.

  14. Black Swan. My fave headfuck in recent times. And I know the feminist commentary didn't work for anyone but it really struck a chord with me. Plus, dancing porn. I think it'll last the test of time (for me).

  15. Easy A. Okay, I only saw this recently, but it is literally everything I've ever wanted from a teen movie (that isn't 10 Things). The ultimate anti-slut shaming shutdown. Emma Stone is the perfect woman.

Before December spamming starts I thought I might as well vent/scream about The Heirs of Slytherin. Spoilers up to/including ep 16.

[he who wears the ugly sweater must bear the weight of the shade.]
So… I am not sure what to think about this show right now because I feel like it's taken a weird shift from being a super cynical teen show about class and power to being THE IMPOSSIBLE AND UNIRONICALLY MELODRAMATIC LOVE STORY OF CHA EUN SANG AND KIM TAN and as we all know that is literally my least favourite thing about this show, ASK ME HOW.

… In fact, I will tell you how. I genuinely could not anti-ship this harder if I tried. Like, how do I begin to count the ways in which Tan is a controlling af asswipe who does nothing for Eun Sang? In this episode alone he repeatedly dragged her around like a rag doll, invaded and destroyed her personal belongings, ordered Young Do to babysit her as though she wasn't right there, lectured her about following his wishes, and threatened violence if she didn't comply. And one of the instances of manhandling comprised of him pulling her into a dark closet in order to initiate a kiss that she literally wouldn't be able to refuse.

Speaking of which, were we actually supposed to find that sexy?

Because.

THE MIND, IT BOGGLES.

Even if you disregard the part where Lee Min Ho and Park Shin Hye have negative sexual chemistry. it is really intensely uncomfortable to me that there have been several Eun Sang/Tan kissing scenes now and zero of them have been initiated by Eun Sang. Never mind the fact that she has not been A PARTICIPANT in most.

But of all the things that bother me about this ship, arguably the most worthy of rage is the fact that Eun Sang's story now revolves completely around Kim Tan. And not in the way that Tan's life revolves around Eun Sang because she is ~all he has, &c. &c. Tan still gets to have a storyline about his angsty family relations and illegitimacy inferiority, blah blah blah nocurr. Whereas everything about Eun Sang's character that is not directly about Tan, e.g. her goal to get through school and get better opportunities, her relationship with her mother, her other friendships, etc. have all been relegated to the background in favour of the OTP of DOOM.

And now we have hit the part of the drama where melodramatic obstacles have been contrived to tragically separate the star-crossed lovers. Ergo, I've been forced to conclude that this has been meant to be a straight romance all along. Although again, THE MIND, IT BOGGLES, supposedly all of Tan's shitty behaviour has just been a part of THEY DON'T WRITE SONGS ABOUT THE ONES THAT COME EASY and the show has no plans to address how problematic this relationship is. At best, the separation might force both of them to grow up and then maybe reunite in a less fucked up fashion but at this point IDGAF. It is seriously such a shame that the single WORST thing about this show is its central storyline.

Okay, enough about the NOtp.

MOVING ON TO BETTER THINGS:

Myung Soo and Young Do remain the most functional relationship on this show. I have nothing further to say on this matter.

SPEAKING OF BFFS.

God is real tbh. I have been anticipating this surprise friendship since like episode 5 and the show has not let me down. YOU GUYS. HE ORDERED LIKE 200 POUNDS OF SOY MILK WITH WHICH TO VANDALISE THEIR PEERS' LOCKERS AS REVENGE FOR THEM HARASSING HER. THEIR BROMANCE WILL GO ON.

I'm glad too that Tan and Young Do are bros again because my heart is soft in this way. And because it leads to hilar sequences such as Kim Woo Bin acting as Young Do pretending to be Tan pretending to be Young Do in a plot to break Tan out of house arrest. Ah, this show.

On the topic of this show giving me everything I want.

MY ENTIRE LIFE I HAVE WAITED FOR THIS MOMENT. (LIZZIE, WHERE ARE YOU.)

Obviously I ship Rachel/happiness, so even though I will always have a soft spot for Rachel/Young Do for reasons of sex, I am rooting for a Hyo Shin/Rachel endgame at the end of the day. Also, they hit all my kinks super hard. Initiating a first kiss as part of a plot to make other people jealous?? "I HAVE NO FEELINGS TOWARDS YOU"/"I HAVE NO FEELINGS TOWARDS YOU EITHER"??? Show, you know where I am most weak.

Ahem. Speaking of my weaknesses. This

[source]

was a motherfucking beautiful scene. Like, you don't understand. After seeing the episode I'd be walking around doing random things, and then I'd suddenly remember this scene, and I'd hunch over and grab my stomach and let out weird moans of anguished ecstasy and my cat would look highly alarmed, THAT IS HOW GOOD THIS SCENE WAS.

I may or may not have let out a particularly embarrassing punched-in-gut sound at "I'm just someone passing by" because goddamn if that doesn't get at the core of life and the world tbh.

... Existential brooding notwithstanding, this scene also encapsulated why this ship has worked so well for me from day one in that it is basically the perfect anti-romance narrative?? imo they've done something that's pretty subversive in light of the Boys Over Flowers model of romance that is apparently the kdrama ideal, i.e. Mean Boy who reinvents himself with redemption fantasy woman (… which, ironically, also describes Eun Sang/Tan). Because Young Do is not allowed to get what he wants.

More than that, the show actually straight up said it is his own fault, which is kind of incredible next to the popularity of "romantic heroes" like Gu Jun Pyo, etc. They straight up said that bad treatment =/= romance. (Don't ask me then why it insists on pushing Tan as a romantic hero.) Young Do literally asking for a do-over and being denied it was meta in the best way imaginable. There are no do-overs, actions have consequences, and he is a fuck up who has blocked his own shot and his heart is breaking outside a damn convenience store and I just want to smash through a window because IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL.

... So, even though there is a thirsty part of me that is secretly hoping that Eun Sang getting all flustered while touching Young Do on his motorcycle means they will fit in some time in the last few eps to ferociously bang (because HOW COULD YOU WASTE THAT CHEMISTRY)… it also just seems right to me that it really was just never going to happen, and that was the point.

ALSO, KIM WOOBIN IS THE BIGGEST DICK THAT EVER DICKED. I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING AN EMOTIONAL STOMACHACHE SINCE YESTERDAY BECAUSE OF HIS FACE??? WHAT THE FUCK.

Btw, I've decided that this song that's always playing during Eun Sang/Young Do scenes is the only tolerable one on this OST. It's called "Growing Pains", which is both DEPRESSING AND PERFECT.

/rolling in the deep

Other things that are gr8:

  • Eun Sang's mother/Tan's mother is the true OTP.

  • There has been tragically little Bonsang in recent times but nonetheless they also remain the true OTP.

  • Bo Na/Chan Young are the most shippable established ship in existence. I'm constantly in shock about how much I enjoy them considering the pulsing mass of hate and rage that lies in place of my heart tbh.

  • lol baby!Chan Young.

  • Kim Woo Bin is a motherfucking beautiful male specimen. I have said it before and will say it again. I literally don't comprehend how anyone could find Lee Min Ho more attractive in this. But then, I am hilariously biased.

GTFO:

  • Won is my enemy and needs to die. Seriously WTAF is wrong with both the Kim brothers and their delusion that their gfs = their property. Hyun Joo/Won is second only to Eun Sang/Tan on the list of violent anti-ships on this show.

  • Speaking of which, the writers are clearly paralleling the two relationships but I have no idea what purpose that's supposed to have. Can't Tan's horde of ugly sweaters combine their forces to eat the both of them, I ask you.

To conclude:

There are no words.

I haven’t posted in so long that I’m sure some of you have assumed I’ve died. Indeed this is about what has happened. Death by final papers. Ah, academia. But in happier news I am on the homestretch, ergo post.

i.  Eleonore and I are making way on an evil plot to induct Lizzie into the SHINee world. Thus, we have carefully compiled an evil intro playlist* designed to wreak havoc and appease the dark lord &c. &c. (Note to certain flisters: Don’t even think about arguing over song choices yo, y’all know “Dazzling Girl” is secretly their best song.) fyi I've used music videos where applicable on account of the fact that SHINee has some truly terriblemazing MVs that frankly must be seen for oneself. The "best" is probably the one for "Lucifer" (the first one). The more you see it the less sense it makes. Why does it play like a musical car commercial. WTH are those wispy patronus things about? Are they supposed to represent the devil possessing them (to dance complicatedly in front of a bunch of shiny cars)? We may never know. But everyone looks bangin' so who cares?

I'd also advise watching their lives because melodramatic yet technically sound belting + choreo porn ("how do they breathe" -- that too we may never know). Please follow the links and cry.

*not including the latest album as that has already been linked accordingly and produced excellent results mainly thanks to Lee Taemin’s propensity to whore around shirtless in a tacky black fur coat, Satan bless that disturbed child

ii. I have been watching The Heirs.[LOVE IS THE MOMENT /cue]

+ This show is half terriblemazing, half scarily on-point and cynical about power dynamics. Needless to say, I'm obsessed. (For the longest time I have had a hole inside me where good teen trash should be, friends. Pity my life.)

+ KRYSTAL IS EVERYTHING. E V E R Y T H I N G. tbh I'm a bad stan and had no idea she even had an acting career but in fact she is absolutely hilarious and charming and inhabits the role flawlessly. I just want to puke all over her face!!

+ Bo Na/Young Do is the OTP. (CANON IS FOR THE WEAK TBH.) If it happens you need convincing of this fact, I'm just gonna leave this here.

+ lbr Bo Na/everyone is the true OTP of the universe. Y'all know how I feel about happy people in love but Bo Na/Chan Young are literally the greatest thing. LAUGHING TO MY GRAVE OVER THE ENTIRE PAINTBALL SEQUENCE. Hell, I even have shippy feelings about Bo Na/Tan despite her being too good for his ass, because Bo Na's presence makes literally everything better. And lbr this show will not be complete without Bo Na and Eun Sang driving off into the sunset together.

+ Sad to see Eun Sang doesn't seem to be getting the love from fandom. I can understand why, though. (Besides the fact that haters gonna hate, especially when there's a love triangle concerned.) Eun Sang has had to be a primarily reactive person, which isn't her fault at all, but I can see how this could be perceived as passivity.

THAT SAID, opaque women are where I live, so obviously I love her. And I have absolutely zero problems with her characterisation. She makes all of the sense to me. Firstly, the "be quiet and do nothing" approach is explicitly a survival strategy. Secondly, it's also been established that Eun Sang DOES want to "do things" -- she wants to get out of her situation and go to a good school and get opportunities and achieve things //for herself//. She's just never allowed to. She is having to play the Madonna role despite being very very ill-suited for it. Life has made her bitter and numb. What's more, she has trouble expressing positive emotions because she basically never gets what she wants -- and since she can never have nice things she also has trouble differentiating what she really wants from what she feels obliged about (SEE: TAN, SMH). Park Shin Hye remains queen because she communicates all of that very clearly IMO. Basically, this is a Eun Sang appreciation blog now, deal or eat a tree.

+ lbr I am easy about women, so Rachel is also my girl. Though I won't disagree with the call for more fleshing out, I'm not that mad about what we've had so far? Particularly loved the shit out of her threatening to break up the engagement just to make Tan's life hell. Grab for power where you can, bb.

+ Tan is the worst. I am pretty sure the show agrees. Possibly I'm being optimistic about authorial intention. I had my doubts at first, but the episode in which Tan straight up told Eun Sang to forget compassion and stay out of it (while pointedly ignoring himself Woo Bin's abuse of Joon Young) soothed my soul somewhat.

And then he premeditatedly set up a situation in which his childhood friend would be physically abused by a family member and I O__________O -ed but was also \o/ because the gloves are apparently off concerning Tan being motherfucking evil?

Or maybe not. But fwiw I do think Tan is a pretty consistently drawn character: He's illegitimate, yet he's still grown up with all of the privilege ever, ergo he has manly angst about his alienation but no actual insight into people who have it harder than him (see: Eun Sang). His situation has taught him that power is superficial, ergo he has perfected the emotional manipulation and controlling of his image (see: with Young Do's father) to stay at the top of the hierarchy. At the same time he's bored and yearning to make/get something "of his own", ergo his fixation with Eun Sang, whom he met in a different country and who is "different" from everyone else he knows, someone with whom he can reinvent himself. And who really cares if she doesn't want to play along. I don't like him, but I buy him.

+ Ditto Eun Sang/Tan. There's not much I can add to Eleonore's epic wrong!ship manifesto of doom + headcanon, so I will probably not attempt to. Except to say that I AM KEEPING MY EYE ON THEM. I've been convinced that it makes sense for Eun Sang to be vulnerable to Tan's guilt-tripping (seriously, such a good emotional manipulator, that pos) considering the aforementioned desire v.s. obligation issues, but it remains to be seen whether the show will keep portraying their relationship as problematic or whether it will all be unironic LOVE IS THE MOMENT montages. Prayer circle.

+ Actually, forget Tan being the worst, WON IS THE TRUE WORST. WHAT IS YOUR PURPOSE IN LIFE AND THE WORLD, DUDE? I basically tune out during his scenes now.

+ I must say, Lee Min Ho is getting his ass kicked by Woo Bin. I think both of them are fantastic actors but hilariously, Min Ho had about ten times more presence on Boys Over Flowers (a show that on the whole was beneath him tbh!).

+ Speaking of, I love how the one thing my flist can all agree with about this show (besides Krystal Jung's objective perfection) is our collective boner for Kim Woo Bin. Ha. Ha. Ha.

:| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :|

ngl I fear next episode because of the, er, state he is apparently in in the preview. DO NOT TALK TO ME ABOUT IT.

Ahem.

+ It's hilarious that Young Do is prob my fave dude considering how much I loathed him in ep one. (Seriously, I have the biggest squick that ever triggered about school bullying.) I can actually pinpoint the moment I came around and it is a laughable one, guys: It's when he insisted on playing emo thrash metal in the car while Rachel side-eyed everything. This is the way I roll.

And then later he inadvertently made some little kids cry and I was like, "how can u h8, self." So now I have stopped hating him and instead starting hating myself. Ah, life's twists and turns. :|

+ Also, ngl I totally wrong!ship Eun Sang/Young Do. Actually, it makes me less uncomfortable than her and Eun Sang in some ways, mainly because both Young Do and the show are unambiguously upfront about him being the worst. Plus, there is zero visceral obligation on Eun Sang's part to return his attention (unlike with Tan, ugh). I can understand the confusion about Young Do's interest in Eun Sang, but I think it's interesting because it exposes his true existential dilemma, i.e. wanting authenticity v.s. wanting to keep the upper hand with everyone and so never lose his coping mechanism. The show may fuck it up later, but rn I buy everything.

+ Hold up. Forget the Kim brothers being the worst. YOUNG DO'S DAD IS THE TRUE WORST. END.

+ AND THAT IS ENOUGH ABOUT THIS SHOW SMH.

+ Oh no, wait, Hyo Shin and Hyun Joo should bang.

+ THAT IS REALLY THE END.

iii. I want to belatedly do that Halloween Trick or Treat meme but I worry about time/responsibilities. So, I guess, comment on this post with "TRICK OR TREAT" and I will probably link you something cool but maybe with a bit of delay because the real life? Alternately, depending on who you are, I may give you a trick instead. :D

P.S. Dear Kelsey: I can't believe you sent me a Namu-shaped fridge magnet. (Btw, lol that these even exist.) I will never be able to put it up for fear of other people in the house asking if it's "one of those Korean dudes that I like who look like girls". We will not talk about the contents of your letter. NOPE.

(1) I am on a brief break from school. Hence, postage.

(2) But more significantly, it is my cat's birthday today! Pixie is no longer a kitten. ;___; To celebrate, here is a photo of him on a ladder:[yay.]

(3) As I am online I guess I will use this opportunity to talk about television.

Elementary is returning in a matter of days (... in Australia) and I realize I never posted about my feels about the ending of S1. So.[idk]

  • So... that twist. I am ambivalent. This post pretty much sums it up for me. Not that I don't think it's kind of ingenious, because it is, but I can't be unreservedly flaily about it either.

  • Irene(/Moriarty)/Sherlock should totally be my thing (FOE!YAY!) but evidently I am doing it wrong because honestly I am not really shipping that. The flashback dump did not excite me and oddly I am not seeing the Jonny L.M./Natalie D. fire I want to be seeing. I WANT TO SHIP IT BUT I DOOOOOOON'T. #life problems

  • I maintain that the Joan/Sherlock story is the single best, most consistent, and best-developed thing about the show and I am still way more invested in their relationship than anything else. He named a bee after her, ok, all other arguments are irrelevant.

  • Alternatively, Joan/Moriarty should be a thing.

  • Lookin' forward to s2 though, despite my grumbling!

And I was supposed to review White Christmas aaaaages ago but didn't b/c suck and now I've lost most of my immediate feels ;___________; Still,[this was my kind of xmas tale, friends.]

  • ZOMG best show ever.

  • Obviously the "are monsters created or born?" theme appealed, although sometimes I felt like it was more like an anvil -- in contrast to how subtle and slow-paced the overall show was.

  • But the way they wrapped up that theme was :D :D :D I endorsed that ending so violently.

  • Dude, Bang Sung Joon is crazy attractive in this. The shorter hair suits him so much better than the SUFBB mop tbh. And, fine, sociopathy also looks crazy good on him, smh.

  • My other "fave" dudes were Mi Reu and Yoon Su and Young Jae for reasons of psychotic jackassery and in Yoon Su's case unadulterated masochism. X(((((((

  • Speaking of which, SO UPSET ABOUT YOON SU'S DEMISE WHY SHOW WHYYYYY /o\ /o\ /o\ /o\ /o\

  • ofc Eun Sung was my girl. The m:f ratio didn't even bother me here because Eun Sung.

  • lbr Eun Sung/Young Jae was the wrong ship of my dead heart, I NEVER CLAIMED NOT TO BE EMBARRASSINGLY PREDICTABLE. "become twisted enough for a twisted boy like me to like you"??? LIKE IT COULD BE ANY OTHER WAY.

  • And then I read Ranya's fic and I cried and my tears were black mascara.

  • This show deserves a much better review OTL but suffice it to say everyone should watch this and then come cry.

Aside from White Christmas I also recently finished My Girlfriend is a Gumiho and Coffee Prince! \o/ Oh, and Boys Over Flowers. Which I am not going to spare further thought to because lol no. Aaaaand I am now about halfway through Playful Kiss, which I am enjoying a lot more than I would... So if you have feelings about those things then heckle in comments.

(4) Can someone please explain to me why Infinite are playing at the likes of L.A. and Paris on their world tour but not doing A SINGLE DATE in Australia? Like, it's Australia. tbh I have no idea how popular they are in the U.S./Europe (supposedly the NY tickets sold out quickly, idk?) but come on. DOES FRANCE HAVE ITS OWN KPOP RADIO CHANNEL? I THINK NOT. (Not that I know what I'm talking about, mind.) Anyway, I hope everyone on my flist who have tickets have the time of their lives on my behalf. Please touch Woohyun for me. (No, don't really do that, leave him alone.) (But do send him this bleeding black heart from me to his fishnet shirts. ;______; I can say no more.)

(5) idk.

Notes: This is for upupa_epops' Elena Gilbert centric fic Help, I'm Alive (the title of which is also the first track on the mix because that's the way we roll). Without getting into spoilery territory, the premise of her fic is essentially that life sucks and then you die and then it keeps sucking, and thus I have made efforts to offer a suitable soundtrack. Go read, worship, and listen to the following if you so desire (follow the link to dl!).

If we're still alive
My regrets are few
If my life is mine
What shouldn't I do?

High tide
Inside
The air is dew
And where were you?

While I
I died
And where were you?

06. Daniel Ahearn - I Will Let You Go

Put your hands in the water
watch them go under
Put your hand to the light
watch the light come through
And I will let you go

Put your time on the table
See who'll sit down with you
Give your love to the ones who offer you bruise
After bruise, after bruise
And I will let you go

07. Panda Su - Eric Is Dead

i once was when we first set our eyes on it

nothing's left, no turning back, i've already told you that

Now I must begin again
To be frozen

09. Blonde Redhead - Here Sometimes

A little girl upon the fireplace
Only air flying emotionless
Ring the bells for she could keep flying

End of day, we watched the sun go down
I can see you're like a firework
You want to save me, people will save me
But this is you, completely you

10. The Cardigans - My Favourite Game

And this is not a case of lust, you see
it's not a matter of you versus me
It's fine the way you want me on your own

I've bathed in nothing but sweat
And I've made hallways
Scenes for things to regret

I'm locked in my bedroom, so send back the clowns
My clone wears a brown shirt, and I seduce him when there's no one around

Bring it on like a storm, till I knock the wind out of his sails
And we don't make eye contact, when we have run-ins in town
Just a barely polite nod, and nervous stares towards the ground

13. Florence & The Machine - Breaking Down

All alone on the edge of sleep
My old familiar friend
Comes and lies down next to me
And I can see it coming from the edge of the room
Smiling in the streetlight even with my eyes shut tight
I still see it coming now

14. Aimee Mann - You Could Make A Killing

There is nothing that competes with habit
And I know it's neither deep nor tragic
It's simply that you have to have it

So you can make a killing
Oh you can make a killing

I wish I was both young and stupid
Then I too could have the fun that you did
Till it was time to pony up what you bid

15. Bon Iver - Blindsided

Taut line, down to the shoreline
The end of a blood line, the moon is a cold light

There's a pull to the flow
My feet melt the snow
For the irony, I'd rather know
'Cause blinded, I was blindsided

16. Declan Flynn - Ease My Pain

Out of time, I hear your voice
Break through the noise
And pain, my heart’s refrain

Why can’t I convince myself
That this is the right time
To contend

17. Ellie Goulding - Salt Skin

You're as sharp as a knife and you fit like a glove
That is no way to live, that is no way to love
Full of fear in your skin and the weakness in giving in
Stabbed in the back but you feel no pain
Push the heaviest doors that you can't open
Yeah, they tied me up and my body lies still, again

18. The Naked and Famous - Girls Like You

How would you cope if the world decided to
Make you suffer for all that you were?
How could you dance if no-one was watching
And you couldn't even care if they were?
What would you do if you couldn't even feel?
Not even pitiful pain
How would you deal with the indecisions
Eating away at the days?

Don't you know people write songs about girls like you?
About girls like you
